About the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County
Since 1933, The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County has courageously met the needs of injured, abused and neglected animals and the humans who care for them. The organization firmly believes that the ethical treatment of animals – and the connections forged between humans and animals – strengthen our community. To this end, it offers services including animal adoption, animal training, low-cost veterinary services and community education.
Pencil us in – we’re turning 90 and our celebration will be incomplete without YOU. Join us at Paw Prints Party in September to commemorate this milestone and secure a love-filled future for animals in Memphis and Shelby County.

Tatum is a 4-month-old puppy who came to the Humane Society on a busy Saturday. A woman on her way to work saw her stumbling by the side of Stage Road and stopped to help. The poor puppy was covered in wounds, so she rushed her to the Humane Society.
Our staff jumped into action and found deep puncture wounds that were filled with dirt and leaves from living on the street. Her spine was nearly visible through one of the injuries and she had a broken jaw which may require surgery.
Tatum is being treated and will eventually heal and find her forever home. The good Samaritan who picked up Tatum took the first step in saving her life. But without YOU, there’s no second step – no veterinarian, no medicines, no place to heal and find love
Our daily operating expenses exceed $9,000. That pays for veterinary care, staff, lights, AC and heating, warm and clean kennels, nutritious food, and love for unwanted animals. At the Humane Society, pets are given as much time as they need to find their forever home. No animal will be euthanized due to lack of space or length of stay.
Register for Camp Today!
Dive into the world of animal welfare and learn compassion, responsibility and safety from Humane Society staff and other experts in the animal field. Campers will get hands-on experiences with both dogs and cats as they learn about what makes them unique and what they need from us as their caregivers. The Humane Society Animal Explorer Camp is ideal for children ages 8-12.
Camp activities include tours of our facility, observing daily animal care tasks, training pets with positive reinforcement, making crafts for animals in our care and collaborative lessons with other community partners!
