Humane Society Success Stories

November 2, 2023

Did you know that from November 5th to November 11th, we celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week? It’s a time when we applaud the tireless efforts of shelters across the country, recognizing the lifesaving care they provide to both animals and the communities they serve. We proudly stand among those dedicated organizations here in Memphis and Shelby County. As we commemorate our vital work, we’re eager to share some heartwarming tales of success that we’ve played a part in this year.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Meet Cece, a 4-year-old spaniel mix who arrived at the Humane Society in a pitiable state – disheveled, uncared for, her fur horribly and painfully matted, and her trust shattered. But look at her now; Cece is a vision of resplendence. With her newfound beauty and a heart brimming with trust, she’s become the warmest companion to the kind souls who adopted her.

A little love goes a long way.

Kitty cat Portland’s story is one of enduring love. After spending nearly eight years in a in a home she was returned to our facility, her trust in people eroded. With chronic health issues making her more reserved, we embarked on an unconventional path. Portland found a temporary home with a foster family for over ten months, and it worked miracles. Today, she’s in a loving home and is a vibrant, affectionate kitty, comfortable in the presence of new friends.

Foster care is an essential part of our work. Often, we are faced with requests to take animals that we do not have space for in the building, or that are too young or ill to be ready for adoption. Our foster care program is nothing short of a lifeline, quite literally saving lives.

Nourishing both the hungry and hopeful.

A ray of generosity recently shone on the Humane Society when we received over 13,000 pounds of dry dog and cat food from our neighbors at Amazon Fulfillment Centers. This gift allowed us to replenish our community pet food pantry, providing sustenance to pet owners in need and sharing the bounty with animal rescue partners across the Mid-South. This act of kindness ripples through the community, nourishing both bellies and spirits.

A gift that echoes through time.

Throughout the year, the Humane Society has been a beacon of care, hosting low-cost, drive-thru vaccine clinics at our shelter. Each clinic has served as a lifeline for local pet owners in Memphis and Shelby County, ensuring that their beloved companions receive vital vaccinations as well as microchips to always find their way home.

It’s only through your unwavering support that we can continue our mission of compassion, caring for the animals and their devoted owners in our community. Join us in marking National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week by making a donation that touches countless lives. Your kindness knows no bounds.
