National Immunization Awareness Month: Why it’s important to stay up on your shots!

Just like with humans, it’s important to keep your pets up to date on their vaccines! August marks the start of National Immunization Awareness Month for pets, which seeks to promote the importance of pet vaccinations. Immunizations for your pets are important because they prevent diseases from spreading to other pets or humans; protect your pet from certain illnesses; and save money on otherwise costly treatments.

One of the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County’s goals is to promote human wellness through animal companionship, and we’re committed to educating pet owners about the importance of vaccines, as well as making immunizations accessible to everyone. Below, we offer helpful tips you can keep in mind to make sure your pet stays safe and healthy.

Conduct the research.

Just like humans need different vaccinations based on age, lifestyle or where they live – so do pets! It’s important to research what vaccines may be beneficial to your pet’s health, in addition to their annual core vaccines. Pets may need different vaccines depending on their level of travel; how often they interact with other pets and wildlife; or if they have pre-existing health conditions. Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your pets are receiving the vaccinations that are right for them!

Stay on schedule.

Missed vaccination appointments is a common reason why pets contract preventable diseases. However, there’s no need to fret if you’re struggling to stay on top of your pet’s appointments. Here are a few helpful tips to make sure your pets are always up to date on their vet visits.

Try scheduling multiple appointments in advance and setting calendar reminders. This is a great tip for puppies and kittens, who need vaccines more frequently than older pets. Many veterinarian offices also offer mail reminders for annual appointments, so be sure to sign up! Lastly, leaving reminders in your pet’s common areas, such as above their food dish or by their leash, can also help.

Check your local resources.

Although vaccinations are an essential part of pet care, they may not be financially accessible to everyone. That’s where the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County steps in. Our team is committed to making animal ownership accessible by offering low-cost vaccination appointments for qualifying individuals. With all core vaccines and several lifestyle vaccines offered at an affordable cost, you can ensure that your pet will remain healthy and safe.
