When it comes to dressing up for Halloween, you’re missing out if you’re not getting your pet involved! Dogs and cats that are open to being dressed up can add a fun layer to your family costume collaboration. So, what will your animal be this Halloween? We put together several easy options you can do with your pet this year!
The Hollywood companion
Looking to keep your costumes simple? Start by thinking about famous dogs! There are a number of dogs that have graced the silver screen that you can use as inspiration. As a bonus, they usually have a human companion that you can emulate! A simple collar and a box of Scooby Snacks would make for the perfect Scooby Doo costume. If you have a small dog, all you need is a basket and blue fabric to create the perfect partner for a Wizard of Oz ensemble. Or, a posh pink collar and a sweater could create Bruiser Woods’ look on his way to Harvard Law School. What, like it’s hard?
There are some celebrity cats you can recreate, too! All your orange cat needs is a plate of (fake) lasagna to embody Garfield. And, any cat with a collar and a villain to stroke their fur can pose as Dr. Evil’s Mr. Bigglesworth. Or, you could find a simple mouse toy to make your cat part of the dynamic duo – Tom and Jerry.
The favorite food
You and your pet probably agree on a love of food, so why not turn your animal into a tasty treat for Halloween! One of the most iconic small-dog costumes is the hotdog. Creating this look couldn’t be more simple. Strap a fake bun to them and put on a baseball uniform and the two of you are ready to sing, “Take me out to the ball game”!
If a hotdog doesn’t do it for you, you can take a sweeter approach and go as the perfect breakfast combo. With a collar designed to look like a plate and a butter hat, your dog or cat can become a short stack of pancakes or waffles! All you need is a pair of pajamas and a cup of coffee to match!
Thinking about being something trendy? In an adorable avocado costume, your dog can be the avocado to your toast. Now, all you need is a bread costume!
The classic creature
If Halloween figures are more your style, you’re in luck! Your pet can easily go as a bat and you as a vampire, or vice versa! Everyone always gets a good laugh at a dog or a cat running around as a life-size spider. Or, you could rock a white sheet and have your pet track you down as a ghost and Ghostbuster. Everyone loves a classic costume!
While dressing up and going out is fun, it’s important to remember that many Halloween festivities are not intended for animals. Choose your costume and activities based on your animal’s level of comfort, behavior and needs. Focus on the safety and health of your animal first and fun second!
