PetSmart Charities Grant Funds Low Cost Vaccine Clinics

PetSmart Charities Grant Funds Low Cost Vaccine Clinics

For Immediate Release

November 27, 2017— MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County has just received a $5,120 grant from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America.  While many grants to the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County are designed to help pets currently in the shelter, the new grant is aimed at keeping more pets out of local shelters through intake diversion practices that ultimately will help to reduce pet homelessness  throughout Memphis and the surrounding communities.

The most common reasons pets are surrendered to local shelters by their pet parents are because of behavioral problems and limited access to affordable pet wellness, training and education programs.  With this grant, the Humane Society hopes to support pets and pet parents in need of these services by providing access to low-cost vaccinations for those on government assistance.

“Vaccinations are probably the single most important preventative medicine we have for our pets. They also help keep animals out of our city shelters and in their loving homes where they belong,” said Matthew Womack, Community Outreach and Humane Education Manager at HSMSC. “We just want to do our part and help provide all pet owners, no matter their income level, with the opportunity to give their pet the safety and peace of mind that comes with vaccinations.”

Historically, funding to support emerging best practices like intake diversion programming has been hard to come by in animal welfare.  That’s why PetSmart Charities identified this as an area of great need, both for shelters and for pet parents across North America, and developed this new grant category. The Humane Society’s grant is one of the first intake diversion donations made by PetSmart Charities.

Intake Diversion is just one of PetSmart Charities’ ten grant categories designed to support their expanded mission: to find lifelong loving homes for all pets by supporting programs that bring people and pets together. Funding from PetSmart Charities supports best practices and thought leadership that enhance the human-animal bond and keep more pets in loving homes and forever families.  For more information, visit
